Case Description
I recently had an MRI done which showed a couple of things. First, discs on both the left and right side have slipped. In addition, the MRI showed my right condyle never fully developed. It is extremely smaller than the left. I have been told the only way to fix my problem is by surgery to move the discs back in place and to fix the small condyle. The problem is when I mention TMJ, I can't seem to get through the front door to see any surgeons that are on my health plan (Aetna HMO). And the ones that are available do not perform this type of surgery. Is it really that complicated? Does it sound like I need surgery? Does anyone have anyone they would recommend in the Jacksonville area or anywhere in Florida? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Are You This Patient?
When selecting a new doctor, consider the following:
Quality of Explanations: Compare dentist replies. Give preference to well-reasoned, detail-oriented, transparent explanations.
Experience & Qualifications: If a dentist has a practice listing, check their practice description,
special training, typical office procedures and before & after case photographs.
Other Patients' Freedback: If a dentist has reviews, read other patients' reviews. The more
reviews they have, the more likely it is that other patients' feeback is accurate.
Treatment Costs: Dental procedure costs vary from practice to practice and depend on a variety of factors.
Because quality of patient care and treatment results vary from practice to practice most dentists will not "price-match" treatment fees of others.

Have you been told that you are 100% a TMJ surgery candidate? I would highly advise trying other options, more conservative options than surgery. Any conservative oral surgeon will tell you the same. I have found that only about 3% of the time is surgery needed and out of those 3%, only 50% gain any relief after surgery. Have you had your bite looked at to make sure that all of your teeth are contacting properly with the lower jaw in the anatomically correct position? Have you ever tried a TMJ splint? These are some areas I would pursue before letting a surgeon cut on me.
